Icon of the Tenderness Mother of God, End Icon |
Artist Statement: The first thing that popped into my head when reading the Advent challenge from ECVA was the space between the beginning of painting an icon, and the end of the process. The beginning is dark, rough and lacking in depth or detail. But without that darkness, flatness, ugliness, the end would turn out to be flat, without depth. Painting icons teaches us that not only are the dark and ugly parts able to e transformed, but they are actually needed for completeness. Painting an icon is a parable of hope. Bio: Suzanne Schleck is a retired public school art teacher, who has been painting icons with egg tempera for 35 years. She teaches a yearly icon workshop at Kanuga Conferences, and at St. Stephen’s, Richmond, VA. |
