Icon of St. Mary Magdalene

Artist Statement: From hopelessness to joy, from seven demons to a radiant faith. Mary Magdalene has rightly taken her place in our time as the Apostle to the Apostles, a tower of strength all the more remarkable for how far she traveled to get there. She shines as a beacon of hope to all of us: if God can transform her in such a wonderful and dramatic way, maybe God can transform us as well. All we need is love. Mary’s love for Jesus is so powerful it leaps off the page as we read her story. In icons of the Crucifixion, she shows her love through a mourning almost too painful to look at. On Easter morning her devastation at finding Jesus missing is all too clear. But then. When Christ calls her by name, her joy is complete. Later, I imagine her as full of that peace which passes all understanding, and that is the way I’ve chosen to portray her.
