Artist Statement: Contemplative Process: The Byzantine City of Mystras, Greece has few icons that have survived the neglect of centuries. Walking silently through the abandoned churches, I was struck by the vivid color of this Virgin of the Sign. This icon derives from Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel". Immanuel means ‘God is with us.’ I made this photo, because though the face is damaged, the Presence of Immanuel has remained through the centuries, watching over us from the stone archway.
